Mark Erdmann is the craftsman carrying out all restoration / conservation work at Cleveland Art Metals.  He was awarded the post-graduate diploma in the Restoration and Conservation of Fine Metalwork at West Dean College in Southern England, graduating with distinction. The program of study involved working side-by-side with a professional conservator / restorer in formulating and carrying out treatment of high quality 17th – 20th century metalwork. The program also included study of the history of metalworking techniques and styles, as well as conservation science.

Following his degree, Mark Erdmann stayed an additional year at West Dean College for the professional development program, which included increasingly complex restoration work, as well as an internship at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich England, where he worked closely with the head of conservation for fine metalwork and scientific instruments. He also has worked at a silver restoration and plating company in North Carolina. As part of his final year research requirements at West Dean, he recreated the 18th century technique of French plating, a method for covering brass with silver leaf. He has been recognized by the British Antique Dealers Association and the British Decorative Ironwork Foundation for his quality of work and professional approach to fine metal restoration.

Prior to studying at West Dean College, Mark Erdmann had training in metalsmithing and enamelling at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and participated in baroque trumpet making workshops taught by Robert Barclay, where he built historic replicas in brass and sterling silver.  He also has degrees in music education and trumpet performance.

In addition to working full time for Cleveland Art Metals, Mark Erdmann is a fine metal object specialist on call for McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratories Inc. in Oberlin Ohio and Intermuseum Conservation Association in Cleveland Ohio.

Mark Erdmann handles all antique restoration procedures at Cleveland Art Metals including dent removal, soldering and brazing, gold plating, bronze patination, expert pewter repair including dent removal, patching and patina restoration.  He does molding and reproduction by lost wax casting and sand casting of missing elements, which are then gold plated, patinated, lacquered or waxed.
